The trust which runs most services at Deal Hospital has been given the top rating of outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The report on Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) represents an improvement on the last inspection five years ago, when services were rated good.
At Deal Hospital, KCH runs the minor injuries unit, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and end-of-life care. The new rating puts it in the top three community trusts in England – one of only 23 provider trusts rated ‘outstanding’ across England and the only community trust in the south-east.
I visited the hospital shortly before the inspection. Deal Hospital continues to go from strength to strength. I was struck by how hard the staff work and how much they care about their patients – who were full of praise for the doctors and nurses.
We should not forget that not so long ago, Deal Hospital itself was on the brink. Only our strong community campaign saved it. Clearly it was well worth our efforts. I am determined to keep fighting for our NHS – to deliver a fairer share of healthcare for our area.
