Town meeting called for referendum

Moves to call a referendum started this week in earnest when the signatures needed to call a town meeting in Dover were collected and submitted. If the town meeting agrees, then a referendum must be held within two or three weeks.

Never heard of such a thing? Not surprising because this 40 year old law on parish polls is half forgotten and never really used. Yet there is a pressing need for the people to be able to have a say on the People's Port in the Big Society. So here goes . . .

What really annoys me is that you cannot have a district wide referendum until the localism bill is passed. And a parish poll is under very old rules meaning no postal votes and polls only open from 4-9pm.
