This week the port referendum was held in Dover. On a turnout higher than the last district council elections, 98% of people voted yes to our community owning the port of Dover. This was a remarkable result. The turnout of 25% was surprisingly high given that postal and proxy votes were not possible and that polls were only open from 4pm to 9pm. The picture is me with Neil Wiggins, the Chairman of the People's Port Trust.
This referendum is a landmark "Big Society" referendum. The first of its kind under the Prime Minister's vision for communities having greater power under the Big Society. I hope that thing will move forward immediately after the local election "purdah" period.
