Charlie's contract with Dover & Deal

On the matter of MPs Expenses, Charlie Elphicke has made a contract with the electors of Dover & Deal.  Charlie says:

"Ever since the details of MPs expenses were first published, people have been furious about the excessive, unacceptable and possibly illegal claims made by some of the people we send to represent us in the House of Commons.

As your Conservative Prospective MP here in Dover, Deal and the surrounding villages, I want to make it clear to you that I will not play the system. I will not bend the rules. I will not break the law. Instead, I will abide by the standards that politicians expect others to live by. I will stick to the rules set out below.

I want you to treat this as a contract between us. If I serve as your Member of Parliament, I will keep to these rules. If I break these rules, you should throw me out.

Here are my pledges. If I become your Member of Parliament, I promise to:

  • Publish on my personal website details of all my personal expenses incurred as your Member of Parliament;
  • Publish on my personal website details of all my office expenses incurred as your Member of Parliament;
  • Open up my unedited expenses claims to local newspapers on demand and at the end of every financial year in any event;
  • Never claim for food or knives, forks, armchairs, TVs, toasters, washing machines or any other furniture or household goods; and
  • Meet my own tax liabilities without claiming them from the taxpayer.

In addition, I will continue to answer letters, emails and be accessible on the telephone or for face to face meetings as may be needed if I become your Member of Parliament, just as I do as your prospective MP. In all things I will continue to do my very best for the people of Dover & Deal. I will never forget who I serve.

Please let me know what more David Cameron or I can do to restore your trust in our public life.

Charlie Elphicke

Conservative Prospective MP for Dover & Deal  "

Charlie Elphicke

It's tragic that things have come to such a pass I must write this so you know I am serious. Yet we must restore trust in public life.  This is why I have made this contract with the electors of Dover & Deal. For me, there are no grey areas. Deep down, we all know where the line is.  There is a difference between politics and public life. I mean to bring honour to our people in all that I do. If I fail you, please throw me out.
