People often ask "what are the key differences the Conservatives will make in Government?" Let's look at the key changes the Conservatives have been working on locally:
A proper Dover hospital - Labour ruined Buckland and offered us a polyclinic. The Conservatives helped to gather signatures for the hospital petition. We fought alongside local health campaigners for a new proper hospital with beds and 24/7 GP-led emergency services. Charlie wants to see the planned health facility delivered in a sensible, accessible, expandable location - and to see that we get a proper hospital as soon as we can. Already Charlie has spoken in Parliament to press our case for better healthcare.
Expenses reform We all know how many MPs have let us down. And we know all about the claims of the Labour MP made. This is no time for brickbats. It's time to move on. Change and the Coalition is an opportunity to reform things for the long term. To rebuild trust and confidence in our political system for the future. Charlie has made a solemn pledge and contract to the people of Dover & Deal. He is a long standing fighter for expenses reform - Charlie means to do all he can to deliver the new politics and a break from the past.
Crime and border security are worrying problems for our area. Violent crime doubled in the UK in ten years. Over 1,000 people are victims for violent crime locally every year. Human trafficking is disgusting and we need to take back control of who comes through our borders. We need more police on the beat preventing crime, with zero-tolerance and more facilities for our young people. Charlie has already spoken in Parliament about the need to protect our borders and border control.
Living costs and unemployment are hitting families hard. The recession has bitten deep, people have lost their jobs and the Government's crazy borrowing will not only make recovery very slow - it will mean more pain over the next two or three years. Gordon Brown increased taxes on the poorest, the Coalition intends to take the poorest out of tax altogether. Local wages fell over £1,000 in the last five years, unemployment has risen faster here than elsewhere meaning real pressure on hard pressed families. Reducing taxes over time and cutting back the extreme public borrowing of the Labour Government are key to future economic success for us all.
Local Transport has seen terrible underinvestment. The A2 upgrade was axed by Labour. Gordon Brown did nothing about making the A258 safer – the Conservative Kent County Council is now taking action on this after years of Labour neglect. We need to get lorries out of Dover and regeneration in. Yet getting road upgrades in the next couple of years will be difficult because the public finances were shattered by Labour.
